Ever since the iPhone 3G came out one app that should have been released is turn-by-turn navigation. With the power of Google maps, Google directions and 3G technology the iPhone was the ideal platform for turn-by-turn navigation.

Well, better late than never. TomTom, the market leader in satellite navigation have developed the first navigation software in combination with a specially designed car kit for the iPhone. This was demonstrated on stage at Mondays WWDC keynote speech by TomTom’s co-founder and CTO, Peter-Frans Pauwels.

The product is to be launched later on this summer after the release of Apple’s OS 3.0. The TomTom navigation app for the iPhone is based on TomTom’s award-winning turn-by-turn navigation software and will be available via the Apple iTunes App Store. The TomTom car kit for iPhone will probably be available from O2 shops and Apple stores in advance of the apps launch.

The specially developed car kit ensures secure docking, enhanced GPS performance, clear voice instructions, hands-free calling and in-car charging.

The long awaited iPhone software OS overhaul is nearing completion with suggestions that it could be available after the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in San Francisco later on this month. The new version software fills some of the basic holes in the iPhone functionality also adding some significant features for developers. The ability to plug into Google Maps and the option to sell content through apps will have a significatent impact.

Here are some facts on the new software upgrade and hardware rumours:

Free upgrade on the iPhone 3G, £10 on the iPod Touch

Picture messaging and SMS forwarding

Expected as standard on Mobile Phones since 2002, come on Apple you should have known better!!!

Youtube upgrade

This will allow you to enter your subscription, rate videos and much more

Copy and Paste

A 21st Centuary essential, copy, cut and paste how can a business run without this option!!!

Upgraded QWERTY keyboard

Hopefully resolving current issues on responsiveness

Spotlight

Search your iPhone of all its content. Also new search features to be added to Mail, ipod and notes.

32GB version

Not impossible with the price of memory feeling the crunch!!!

iPhone Nano

If this is true, I want one. Well, I found copies in Hong Kong when on my hols in 2008 also, found fully functional bluetooth mobile phone watch compatible in the UK.

Let us have your feedback on the iPhone v3 software upgrade…

The iPhone has paved the way for a new generation of puzzle and word games. To come up with a number, taking into account the thousands of games released for the device, is almost too daunting to consider.

Educational whilst fun, WordFu published by ngmoco and developed by Demiurge Studios is designed for quick play dressed up in a creative martial arts theme and will definitely tax your brain.

There are two parts to the game, rarely lasting more that a few minutes. Firstly, you start with selecting nine letters by rolling and flicking lettered dice to get a good spread of consonants and vowels to boost your word-making potential. You only have twenty seconds to do so too.

On completion of the letter selection, you enter the game itself. Now you start off with 45 seconds to recall and form as many words from the English dictionary as you can submitting each word by shaking the iPhone. You can reuse the letters as many times as you like unless you’re playing in “Shaolin Mode,” where you can only use each letter once to form a word and the longer the word the more points earned.

If you are good under pressure then you’ll start getting white bonus power-up dice to use. One gives you double word score, one freezes the timer for a while and the last lets you flick one of the dice to, hopefully, reveal a new letter. Used properly, the power-up can take your score to new heights and submitting words sets the timer back a few seconds, the game will always be limited to a handful of minutes at the most.

We have had the game for only a few days now, but we are totally hooked on it. We don’t know if in a months time it will have the same appeal however we do highly recommend it.
Platform: iPhone
Category: Puzzle/Word
Price: 59p
